Back to the wall: why wall sits are worth the burn
Did you know?
Wall sits are one of the simplest exercises you can do, but they are incredibly effective at building lower body strength and endurance. All you need is a wall and a little determination!
If you’ve ever tried a wall sit, you’ll know the feeling back against the wall, knees bent, legs shaking, and the burn setting in. While it may look easy, this exercise challenges some of the biggest muscles in your body.
What are wall sits?
A wall sit is an isometric exercise, which means your muscles are working hard without actually moving. You hold a seated position against a wall, typically with your knees bent to around 90 degrees, and maintain the position for as long as possible.
The benefits of wall sits
Build stronger legs
Wall sits target your quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and calves, helping to develop strength throughout the lower body.
Improve muscular endurance
Being strong is one thing, but being able to sustain that strength is another. Wall sits help improve the ability of your muscles to work for longer periods without fatiguing.
Support knee function
Strong thigh muscles play an important role in supporting the knee joint. Wall sits can be a useful exercise to help improve strength and control around the knee when prescribed appropriately.
Low Impact, high reward
Unlike running or jumping exercises, wall sits place minimal impact on your joints, making them an accessible option for many people.
Great for everyday life
Whether you’re climbing stairs, walking hills, playing sport, or simply getting up from a chair, strong legs make daily activities easier.
