Over the last month I’ve been in camp with the Australian U20 Rugby team and after a successful campaign on the Gold Coast at the Oceania Championships I’m off to Northern Italy with the team to partake in the Junior World Championships. This event takes place every year and it is my fifth year that I’ve been involved making me the longest serving staff member. The tournament is a platform to showcase the best junior rugby talent in the world and many great players who will take part in the senior Rugby World Cup later this year have come through this pathway. It is a very tough tournament and our three pool games are against Samoa, Italy and last year’s runners up, South Africa. The goal for us is to make the top four playoffs which will involve collecting bonus point wins against our first two opposition and then at the very least getting a point from the South African game. If we beat South Africa then we will be in a great position to contest for the tournament win. Our best performance since I have been involved is 3rd place in 2011 so to do better than that would be fantastic. “The program over the last five years has been a fantastic experience and allowed me to work alongside some great Sports Doctors, Sports Scientists and coaching staff. All of these skills I have been able to take back to the Clinic and help improve what we can offer our North’s rugby players and wider general public athletes. One of the challenges that we face at this tournament is the short turnaround time between games. With five games of top level rugby in eighteen days it is a challenge to keep all the athletes in the best possible physical condition that we can to enable them to perform at their best”. All of our games are on Fox Sport so tune in and catch the action.
