Understanding your abdominals is an important first step in your rehab process.
The abdominal wall is a complex system of muscles and connective tissue, which help to support your trunk and create movement.
- Transversus Abdominis, commonly referred to as your “core” – this is the deepest layer of your abdominals. When it contracts, it cinches your waist in and provides stability to your trunk.
- Internal and external obliques – your obliques sit on top of your “core” muscle and help with twisting movements through your trunk
- Rectus Abdominis, commonly referred to as your “6 pack” – this is the layer of muscle closest to your skin. It helps with bending movements e.g. sit ups
- Rectus Abdominis commonly referred to as your “6 pack” – this muscle helps with bending movements in the trunk e.g. sit-ups
- Linea alba – this is a thick band of connective tissue that connects the left and right side of your abdominal muscles. Usually this connective tissue is narrow and thick, and acts as a rigid support for the abdominal muscles to anchor themselves on.
